| Tunghai University Endowment Fund |
| |
A five-year, five million dollar fund-raising campaign for the Tunghai University Endowment Fund was initiated and announced during the recent Fiftieth Year Anniversary celebrations of the founding of TunghaiUniversity in Taichung, Taiwan. We are very pleased to announce that a most generous pledge of one million dollars toward the new $5,000,000 goal has already been made by one of Tunghai¡¦s alumni in North America.
The Tunghai University Endowment Fund provides reliable annual support for academic and scholarly activities of the University, including joint programs with other universities within and beyond Taiwan. This permanent Fund was originally established in 1998, thanks to the leadership of someTunghai alumni from Southern California. The new $5,000,000 campaign promises to significantly enhance this Fund, whose value, as of June 30, 2005, was $109,392.
The endowment is held by the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia and is managed by its team of financial professionals, who have consistently shown outstanding returns on the United Board¡¦s endowments.Every autumn, the United Board sends an annual grant to TunghaiUniversity from the endowment. The amount of the annual grant is based on the United Board¡¦s endowment spending policy, which is currently 5% of the 12-quarter average market value of the Fund.Any excess income from investment of the assets is returned to the Fund.
TunghaiUniversity just celebrated its 50th birthday. During its first half-century, the University has educated and contributed many talented and skilled graduates in various areas of science, art, engineering, architecture, music, business, and humanities in Taiwan and throughout the world. To sustain future educational and scholarly activities and contributions, the financial stability of the University is essential. An endowment fund of five million dollars is very small when compared with that of major universities in the US. However, achieving this goal is a first step toward more financial contributions and support from Tunghai¡¦s alumni and friends for the next fifty years.Your contribution will have a positive impact on Tunghai for generations to come; please, make your generous donation now.
All donations to the United Board for the Tunghai University Endowment Fund are tax deductible in the US to the full extent allowed by law, and all contributions are important and greatly appreciated. The United Board will continue to provide logistical support for the new campaign, including issuing tax receipts and sending annual pledge letters.
Please be sure to make your check payable to the United Board and indicate on the memo line of the check that it is for the Tunghai University Endowment Fund. You may also contribute by credit card through the United Board¡¦s secure website (www.unitedboard.org).Send your contribution to:

| Infrastructure
Priorities |
| |
| To better equip our students for the next
fifty years, we have begun an ambitious building campaign.
Over the next few years, we will add five major buildings. |
|
| |
| You could name
a room, floor, conference room or an entire building.
Attached is the ¡§Donor Appreciation Reward Guidelines¡¨
for your reference. |
|
| Endowment Program
Priorities |
| |
| Building solid endowments will allow us
to better support our students and faculty members¡¦ development.
There are five endowment priorities we will focus on: |
| |
|
| 1. |
Distinguished Chair Professorships |
| |
|
| |
We will search for high caliber,
high profile scholars to teach and research at
Tunghai University. We plan to pay these scholars
from USD 7,000-10,000 monthly (depending on their
qualifications) and reimburse their travel expenses
(if they travel from abroad). For an annual contribution
of USD 85,000-125,000, you may name a distinguished
chair in any college or department you wish.
|
|
| |
|
| 2. |
Post-doctoral study abroad |
| |
|
| |
To encourage our leading scholars
to develop their research and teaching skills,
you may consider starting a post-doctoral study
endowment. We will offer qualified applicants
a USD 3,000 monthly stipend. It is estimated that
it would cost NT 1.25 million-1.75 million (USD
36,000) for a scholar¡¦s one-year post-doctoral
studies. Competition within Tunghai University
to take advantage of this opportunity will raise
our academic quality.
|
|
| |
|
| 3. |
Upgrading lecturers qualifications |
| |
|
| |
One indicator of educational quality
is the qualifications of its faculty members. Our
goal is to increase the percentage of faculty members
with Ph.D.s. We are encouraging lecturers to upgrade
their academic qualifications and by earning their
doctorates. Providing financial assistance to cover
three years tuition, living expenses and a stipend
would assist Tunghai meet this need. We estimate
that support for each scholar¡¦s three-year study
abroad expenses would cost about NT 3 million-4.3
million (USD 105,000-150,000). |
| |
 |
|
| |
|
| 4. |
Lectureship Series |
| |
|
| |
We have had excellent responses
from the Wu-Teh Yao Lecture Series. Tunghai would
like to give students and faculty more opportunities
to hear from distinguished experts in their respective
fields. For example, Tunghai could invite two
distinguished scholars to give two or three lectures
and submit the manuscripts for publication. Each
scholar may be offered a USD 2,000 honorarium,
free accommodation at the University¡¦s Guest House
and business class air transportation.
|
|
| |
|
| 5. |
Student Scholarships |
| |
|
| |
Scholarships are a great way to
attract good students and reward excellence. This
can encourage distinction in academics, service,
or leadership. One year¡¦s tuition is about NT
100,000 (USD 3,000).
