Holistic Education |
|
| Since its founding, Tunghai has honored the ideals of holistic education and character development. It has been a pioneer in its encouragement of the simultaneous cultivation and interplay of both a well-rounded general education and academic specialization. It views development of character and scholarly sophistication as integral parts of the well-rounded university education, while promoting individual autonomy and democratic decision-making. The university encourages students to attain an understanding of nature, society and human life. |

| As one of the first Christian universities in Taiwan, Tunghai values religious integrity as a way to edify, uplift and develop the complete person. To implement those goals, the university established the General Education and Humanities Center. The curriculum is built around the center of a broad-based general education. Students can choose from elective courses within the five basic categories of Humanities, Social Sciences, Management Sciences, Life Sciences and Natural Sciences. The university encourages students to develop autonomy, character, leadership and teamwork through participation in the Student Government, Departmental Student Associations and over 160 different extracurricular clubs and activities. |
| |
| An appreciation for humanities is also encouraged in other ways, the Art Gallery in the Humanities Building holds exhibitions for famous artists, teachers and students of the Fine Art Department, concerts given by teachers and students of the Music Department throughout the year, and the Landscape Architecture Department engages in many projects to beautify the campus. |
| |
| All of these activities serve to further the rich spirit of holistic education in Tunghai¡¦s synthesis of academics and life. A special example of this is the annual Performing Arts Festival, which takes place every May and combines music and theater to turn the campus into a place steeped in the spirit of the humanities. |
