Industrial Design ¡V Master¡¦s Program
History
The Department of Industrial Design established the Master's program with four aims:
First, the graduate program upgrades the reputation of Tunghai and expands its influence in the design field. The Department¡¦s proven track record enhances the Tunghai University¡¦s reputation. With a well-established traditional background in culture and well-known architectural buildings, it integrates the latest industrial engineering technology with the needs of industry.
Second, the program encourages better industrial design in Central Taiwan. With the well-established cultural facilities and an ideal location, it effectively promotes quality industrial design in central Taiwan industrial area.
Third, the program satisfies the nation¡¦s demand to improve its industrial competitiveness. Industrial design has been thought of a weapon add value to products. Our nation needs competent, well-trained designers and experts to make products more attractive and user-friendly.
Fourth, globalization has pushed local companies to raise their products¡¦ design to appeal to worldwide markets. Industrial design education and research prepares graduates to meet the demands of Taiwanese companies with international ambitions. Quality design is seen as a powerful tool of developing country¡¦s economy.
The characteristics of Tunghai University¡¦s Industrial Design master¡¦s program are human culture, geographic location, and integration.
First, awareness of human culture and trends can be useful to creating quality products with market appeal.
Second, is the University¡¦s geographic location: Tunghai has the only industrial design Master¡¦s program in the greater Taichung area. With Taichung¡¦s growing political, economic and industrial might, the University is well positioned to be a major consultation center and training venue for high level industrial design experts.
Third is integration: This program enrolls students who come from a wide variety of academic backgrounds. This provides an ideal environment for interdisciplinary exchange. Graduates will be well prepared to work effectively with different people in many different industries and vocations. Our department is a pioneer in encouraging learners with different backgrounds to study and research together.
The main research idea of the program is integrating industrial design with industrial engineering. This concept tries to match manufacturing design and industrial automation. Main goals are as follows: systematic design science; environmental design science (relationship of human culture and their environment); cultural design science (relationships of human culture and design); and human and machine design science (interface relationship of human and human, human and machine, and machine and machine).
